To get married at Gretna or Gretna Green (the two places are about a mile apart), you must satisfy Scottish legal requirements (under the terms of the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977). Anyone can get married - not just UK residents - so long as the following basic requirements are satisfied:

1. Both parties must be at least 16 years of age, not related to each and not currently married. (Full details of legal requirements can be viewed at http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1...).

2. A "Marriage Schedule" must be applied for. This must be obtained from the Registrar of Births, Deaths & Marriages at Gretna Registration Office, Central Avenue, Gretna, Dumfriesshire, DG16 5AQ, Scotland, tel: 01461 337648. The website is: http://www.gretnaonline.net/ - the Registration Office can also provide full details of any legal requirements. The website also has links to local businesses offering services, such as hairdressers and hotels.

3. The minimum period for an application for a Marriage Schedule is 15 days before the wedding, but it is much better to apply as early as possible (up to three months in advance). Information can be obtained from the Registration Office at any time.

4. It is possible to have a civil ceremony or a religious wedding. There is a Church of Scotland parish church locally, see: http://gretnaoldparishchurch.com/ (including information about weddings)
