Chatham, Cape Cod has small town appeal. With no fast food restaurants or national restaurant chains, life's pace is slower there, and that's the way the residents like it. Renting (or bringing) a bicycle is a great way to get personal with Chatham, and can help decrease the amount of car traffic, especially in the busiest summer months. There are two bike rental establishments in town which let riders rent all kinds of bikes from as little as little as a few hours to as many as 6 or 7 days. Chatham Cycle is located at 193 Depot Road (near downtown and the Chatham A's Field) and Monomoy Sail & Cycle at 275 Orleans Road/Route 28.
There are a number of taxi services in Chatham, though they can be hard to come by at times. Car rental is the best bet if you're going in July or August, as it affords freedom and comfort. Hertz, National, Alamo, and several smaller car rental companies will help you plan. A rental car will be helpful if you are planning a trip up to Provincetown or over to Hyannis for the day.
To keep up with traffic and congestion problems in summer, the town of Chatham has provided free parking to both residents and visitors in several locations throughout the town. Since Chatham was built before cars were, and because it is inhibited from growth by three sides of ocean, its streets are not always automobile-friendly. Depending on where you go, some restrictions may apply. Simply be sure to observe parking signs.
