The apartment is located in the municipality of Dietroserra Viagrande, about 1 km from the village, at the foot of Monte Serra, in the context of a traditional Sicilian house, situated in a beautiful Mediterranean landscape. It offers a picturesque view of the sea from Taormina to Catania, overlooking the eastern slopes of Mount Etna. My husband had booked us to stay here and I hadn't seen any reviews or pictures. It was such a nice surprise. The place is lovely. Gorgeous views of Mount Etna and surrounding countryside, vine yards, cacti and trees. The house is very spacious and could easily sleep 6 (if not more) . As soon as I got there I was planning my return with more people. the place is very good value for money and has bucket loads of character.
The family were amazing and incredibly helpful. In knowing we had no transport Maria and Claudio came and picked us up from the bus station. They made suggestions on where to eat , good places to shop as well as get souvenirs, also suggested good places to go and see. They went out of their way by sorting us out with bikes for the two days we were there.
Cannot thank all the family enough for making our stay so special. Now we just need to figure out when we are coming back!

Located within reasonable driving distance to etna and the coast this beautiful bungalow/cottage is immaculate and comfortable. The terrace and garden with views of etna are stunning. Beds are very comfortable and the hosts welcoming and warm, whilst in the grounds of their vineyard you are very much left to your privacy. Would highly recommend if you want to come to etna. We played snowballs on Etna in 30 degrees sunshine! Great for self catering, we found it challenging to easily find somewhere to eat on a Monday evening...large supermarket within ten minutes drive. Tea, herbs olive oil and a welcoming bottle of wine available on our arrival..plus milk in fridge..very caring

We had a very pleasant stay here in April. The front terrace IS as idyllic as it looks in the pictures. Although we didn't require any help, the owners gave us a phone number and kept in contact through email in case we needed anything. They were very welcoming - even leaving a bottle of homemade wine and a delicious orange cake for the stay!
The house is well-equipped. They have an drip-style coffee maker as well as a moka and an electric kettle. We used the kitchen a few times over the course of the week and the washing machine as well. It was a bit too cold for the pool when we visited, but I imagine it's wonderful during summer.
The drawbacks are the same as I have found anywhere else in rural Sicily, but I should at least mention them. There is a gate you must lock/unlock when you leave. There were a lot of dogs barking at night. (I didn't mind the dogs because I had ear plugs. I'll also say that the few times I saw dogs on the road at night, they were not at all aggressive or unfriendly.) There is also a very active bird population by the house. Until this trip, I didn't realize how much cuckoo birds actually sound like cuckoo clocks!
This is a great house for relaxing or seeing east Sicily. In the immediate area, there are Etna towns, Catania, and the Riviera dei Ciclopi. Within an hour, you can visit Taormina and Siracusa. Sicilian food and wine are excellent, and Viagrande is just far away enough for the biggest tourist centers than you can avoid other tourists if that's your thing. :)

La casa ci era già è piaciuta tantissimo solo guardando le foto su internet, ma una volta arrivati sul posto ce ne siamo totalmente innamorati!!! inutile dire che siamo volutamente rimasti a casa per tutti i 3 giorni della vacanza proprio per godercela tutta quanta! Immersa nel verde la casetta offre una vista meravigliosa, ovvero il nostro vulcano Etna che durante il periodo invernale mostra la sua fantastica vetta innevata...il che è semplicemente uno spettacolo della natura! La zona è molto tranquilla ed è molto facile raggiungere il centro della città. I proprietari sono due persone squisite, gentilissimi e disponibilissimi i quali ci hanno accolto molto calorosamente facendoci sentire a casa!

We just returned after spending one week in Sicily in this lovely house. We had fantastic weather with 28/29 degrees C and this in the middle of October!
We were so lucky that we found this hidden gem. Already before our Holiday, we have been mailing with the owners and they replied quickly and friendly on all our questions.
The house is set in an ancient vineyard: the wine making seems to have a long tradition in this Family.
There is plenty of space in the property and the holiday house is located in a garden/park on the top of the vineyard. You have your own private terrace/garden and the main garden is also there for you. From the garden you have a fantastic view on the Etna, the surrounding and the coast.
It is really amazing to watch the sun rise from here or in the evening when the last ray of sunlight is painting the Etna in red...
In the garden there is also a swimming pool: you can swim and look at the Etna!
The house is very comfortable, clean, perfectly equipped and just very cosy. There is a huge living room and kitchen in the same room with a big window facing the private terrace. The kitchen is equipped with everything you might need for cooking and enjoying your Food.
There are two bathrooms, of course equipped with towels, hair dryer, but also liquid soap, shampoo, and even washing powder for the washing machine (which was located in the smaller bathroom).
Two bedrooms: one with double bed, the other with two Singles. Plenty of space for your wardrobe.
The only troublemakers were some Miskito in the evening, but we had them also at the beach after sundown. So this seems to be normal in October. The good thing: in the house you have different kind of anti -moskito things (spray, something for the plug socket, candles).
We were also lucky enough to try the wine from the vineyard and it is just delicious.
The Hosts: Gae and Michele are very nice, warm-hearted and welcoming people. We were very lucky that we shortly also met the (almost) whole Family: Maria & Claudio with their kids and Andrea.
We came as guests and we felt like we are leaving as friends.

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of our month long holiday in Italy and loved everything about the house and its location. The house is set in the grounds of a family run vineyard and is tucked away and very private. We were met by Maria who showed us around and left us with a lovely bottle of red wine from their own grapes. Lots of thought has gone into decorating the house and the result is welcoming and friendly. A real home away from home. It was clean and comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. The bathrooms are clean and modern, one with a washing machine. The bedrooms are roomy and the beds comfortable. We cooked a roast in the oven on our first night in the kitchen which overlooks the lounge dining area. The kitchen had everything we needed, including a kettle.
The view from the large picture window looks past the patio to some beautiful old trees and some vines. The patio was a perfect spot to sit after a busy day, the only sounds being the bird life around the house. There is also wifi in the house.
There is also a wonderful green lawn shaded by big old trees with an amazing view to Mt Etna. Next to this is a nice swimming pool perfect for a dip after a days sightseeing.
One day we drove up to Mt Etna. A fascinating drive up through the changing vegetation to the top. We walked around the smaller crater,(take a coat!) and the views as the mist cleared were stunning.
We also travelled down to the coast and explored some of the smaller towns where we found a great seafood restaurant right on the water. There were so many other places to visit , such as Taormina, but we will have to do that next time.
Gae came to see if we had everything we needed. She speaks English well and we enjoyed chatting to her. Gae and her family were so welcoming and friendly and on our last day Maria and her husband brought us some home made sorbet made from mulberries from their own trees.
We would definitely recommend this house as a perfect base to explore this fascinating area and would love to come back one day to enjoy hospitality of this welcoming family.
Thankyou Gae, Maria and family for making our last days in Italy so peaceful and relaxing in your lovely home.

Our party of four, myself, my husband & two sisters arrived on Sunday 3rd August to a warm welcome from Maria, Michele & Gae. Thank you for the wine & delicious cakes! The house was larger than we expected, very comfortably furnished with two bathrooms (one with a washing machine), large dining table & well equipped kitchen. There were plenty of towels & constant hot water for showers etc. In fact everything required for a relaxing holiday. The only thing missing was aircon in the bedrooms for the hot Sicilian nights, although you probably wouldn't need it for most of the year. The house is set in beautiful grounds, with natural shade from trees and a large terrace with views of the surrounding vineyards, countryside & Mount Etna. The good sized pool was clean & refreshing, great for cooling off. The small but bustling town of Viagrande is a five minute drive away, with supermarkets, a great deli with amazing meats & cheeses, an ice cream & cake shop & a couple of restaurants. Ten minutes to the large food stores & shopping mall. Viagrande is a good base, away from the touristy towns, but with easy access, the coast half an hour away, the cable cars half an hour, St Alfio's lava flows half an hour, the town of Zaferana half an hour, beautiful Taormina an hour & the temples of Agrigento two & a half hours (the last two autostrada almost all the way). So if you want to immerse yourself in the real Sicilian culture and countryside, this is the place to come. Thanks for a great stay, we'll be back.

This was my first trip to Sicily and I wanted to make sure I was near Mount Etna; I can say that the accommodation delivered on that and much more.
On arriving at the accommodation we were met by the most hospitable owners, our flight had been delayed and this has meant we were later than expected to the accommodation but the owners where there waiting for us and made sure that we knew how everything worked within the Villa and even left us a bottle of wine.
I would say the pictures do not do justice to the accommodation as the accommodation was much bigger than we expected and the views are absolutely amazing.
In regards to the location, it is easy accessible by car to the town where you will find two supermarkets and a few restaurants and bars, the only issue is that you would need to drive there and there would be no possibility of walking to the nearest restaurant, the owners did leave some flyers for restaurants so that at least you knew of places and thankfully the accommodation had WIFI so I was able to use my IPAD to search for several more plus also plan for our daily excursions to various sites in the area.
The accommodation is on a working vineyard and we did try some of the wine while we were there, unfortunately the shop is only opened on Sunday but we did ask the owner for a couple of bottles during our stay and he was more than happy to oblige with a couple of bottles which were very reasonably priced.
I would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone that would be wanting to visit Mount Etna or are looking for a relaxing and peaceful stay.

The house is spacious, very well-equipped and very clean. It has all the amenities we required except for a kettle which was provided when we asked. There is a lovely view of Etna. The lawned area is very nice but the pool is useless for swimming, only for cooling off. The owners are delightful people, friendly, helpful, unobtrusive and generous - they gave us some lovely granita and a superb cake during our stay.
It is because they were so nice that it is difficult to raise our concerns, but they are important ones.
Just after 7 am on our first morning we were awakened by loud hammering. To our considerable consternation we discovered that the owners are building a second holiday home right next to the one we were in. For the next two weeks we had to endure all the noise of a building site, banging, hammering, sawing, visits by concrete mixers and waggons etc. every working day except one. We found this quite unacceptable but there was nothing that could be done. The owners apologised but that was it. The building work will continue throughout 2014. We feel it is quite wrong to hire out a holiday cottage which is praised for its tranquillity when you know that building work will destroy that. We feel we have been cheated.
On our second day we were sitting on the terrace when a large rat appeared from the adjoining wall and ran across us and into the undergrowth. This happened at least two or three times every day we were there. There was also another kind of jumping rat that made intermittent appearances. The rats always appeared very suddenly and unexpectedly and meant that sitting on the terrace was, for one of us, out of the question. When we complained about this the owners did not really seem concerned saying it was because we were 'a campagna', in the country. Leaving aside the fact that the location is not really in the country, more in the extended suburbs of Catania (there are several modern detached houses adjoining the property), how can the presence of rats in a holiday property ever be acceptable?
There are also several dogs in the area that break out into prolonged bouts of barking either singly or in groups at any time of day or night, even the middle of the night. One starts at 5.30 am every day and continues for about 15 minutes.
There is very little of interest in the surrounding area which is pretty drab and blighted by the unsightly rubbish and fly-tipping that is such a problem in many parts of Sicily. Taormina is about an hour away, Etna the same and Siracusa about two hours. The local roads are a complete nightmare.

Thank you for the appreciations for the cleannes of the house and for our kindness. We want to underline that for us it is very important to receive suggestions from our guests; this gets us to improve our facility! However, we are really sorry for the costernation you showed. As a matter of fact we think that many things written are false and derogatory.
First of all we confirm that there is a building work place near the holiday home. Actually when our guests booked the home we didn'd know building work will be last until their stay. However we couldn't stop them for some burocratics problems. But we tried to reduce noises and to don't make noise during the rest time. What is more we asked sorry many times and we offered to give back part of the amount paied for the stay.
Secondly, the swimming pool is a 7,40 x 4,80 swimming pool. This is bigger than the one represented on the photo of the website at the time of you did reservation.
As for rats and dogs: "Rat" is probably a little mouse living in the country ( not a rubbish rat ). Our guests spend many time in our garden but it is the first time we hear about this! However our holiday home is situated in the country and for this reason we, periodically make the deratization of the whole territory. And please...."jumping rats" they are sure nice harmless ferrets!!!
As for dogs, it is true that in the surroundings there are some dogs, but we have never received any complain about them in the past.
Then, it is untrue that our structure "is not located in the country more in the exteded suburbs of catania": infact the suburb of Catania is far away at least 15 km from our location and our house is located in the middle of an ancient vineyard, at the foot of an old volcano just next to the "Monteserra park". However it is true that in the surroundings there are some modern detached house!
What is more they say that "in the surroundigs there are little thing to see". If you spend all of your time closed at home it is impossible to discover the surroundings. Infact just in front of our house there is the really interesting "Etna Museum", and the "Monteserra park" with the "House of Butterfly". And then, in 10/20 minutes by car you can reach some beautiful villages such as Trecastagni, Zafferana, Acireale and its "barocco"the "Timpa" and many little villages near the sea: Santa Tecla, Santa Maria La Scala, Acitrezza, Acicastello. And a little far away Catania, Taormina, Siracusa, Ortigia, Noto etc etc.
Finally, you use words such as "cheated" and "pretty drab" that are extremely offensive for us! We are honest people and we have never received any complain about our structure, as a matter of fact with our great pleasure the reviews our guests wrote on the web sites "holidayletting.com" "tripadvisor.com" and more of all "homeaway.com" ARE ALL "FIVE STARS".
Taking everything into consideration we feel to agree with the title given to this review “not what we expected” because it is obvious that you had a completely different ideas of what was our holiday house, however we don't know where this difference of expectations came because we make a and accurate description of our facility also on the website you used to make the reservation.
In the end we wish you find in the future solutions more appropriate to your needs.

Wir verbrachten 10 Tage im Ferienhaus Dietroserra im Sommer 2011, es hatte uns damals so gut gefallen, dass wir entschieden, uns auch dieses Jahr einen kleinen Urlaub dort zu goennen.
Das wunderschoene Ferienhaus mit einem riesigen Grundstueck liegt inmitten der Natur, umgeben von Weinbergen, mit Blick auf den Aetna und auf das Meer. Genau das Richtige fuer uns, die nach Ruhe und Abgeschiedenheit von unserem Arbeitsalltag suchten. Die Vermieter, Gae und Michele, sind sehr sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Wir haben uns richtig wie zuhause gefuehlt. Das Haus ist richtig schoen eingerichtet, geraeumig und sauber, mit allem Komfort ausgestattet. Ende September war das Wetter noch sommerlich, wir haben also wunderschoene Tage am Meer verbracht (bei Taormina und Siracusa) und verschiedene Ausfluege in die naheliegenden Ortschaften gemacht. Herrlich! Ein Urlaub in diesem Haus ist absolut empfehlenswert! Wir werden

About the neighbourhood
Viagrande is an Italian town. It is a village of ancient traditions, famous for its vineyards and its gastronomy. The “Gran Caffè Urna”, in fact, is a point of reference for citizens and for all those who want to taste the specialties of the ancient cooking tradition of the place.
The village is well known for its elegance and it is characterized by the presence of many beautiful houses. The territory stretches from San Giovanni La Punta almost to the beginning of the town of Zafferana. Viagrande is part of the district of Catania.
Viagrande has within its territory Monte Serra, an ancient volcanic cone, the lower from the level of the sea, famous for its namesake park. Inside you can visit the butterfly house and you can also sky thanks the presence of an hundred yards long artificial...
Getting around
Right in front of the holiday home is the Etna Museum which introduces you to the world and history through photos of volcanoes, thematic rooms, multimedia and 3D representations. The space dedicated to the Butterfly House, right next to the Museum, is suggestive. It is a tropical greenhouse where hundreds of specimens, among the most beautiful and extraordinary in the world.
Within 10 minutes you can reach the picturesque fishing villages of Santa Tecla, Aci trezza and Acicastello that are characterized by beaches of lava rocks. Then in a short time you can also reach the baroque town of Acireale, the city of Catania and the volcano Etna, where you can do guided excursions.
