Moon palace review Updated. So below is my initial review. I wanted to update you all on a few things since then. I also wanted to explain why I have it at a 4. Jet skis. Booked but on the first attempt we were unable to go due to excessive seaweed. Real shame. The team from aqua world were very good and said it wasn’t safe and we were rebooked. When we did go out they were 20 mins late and our time was cut short BUT it was still great fun and fully recommend. Hard sell of timeshare. I was very annoyed yesterday when I was called and offered four free passes to the grand. No catch I was told just collect them. Sadly when I went to collect them I was told I had to go to a timeshare presentation. I said that wasn’t what I was promised and so declined. I reported it to the General Manager here Carlos and he has apologised but I feel it’s just words. Just like the pool towels. The smoking. The issues with poor housekeeping. The begging for tips. The lack of the refills for bar and snacks. I am sure they have many great reviews but travelling to many places in different ways at different levels of hotel five star isn’t just facilities and service but its customer trust and recovery. Golf club - HUGE TIP if you want quiet use the pool there. The nizuc and even worse sunrise pool areas are a joke in July and August. So busy and people drinking at 10 am. It appears you can’t buy class but you can buy luxury. The golf club has a wonderful pool but it’s quiet and has a breeze and is available for anyone staying at moon palace. They also do a great a la cart breakfast. You can also get burgers and fajitas by the golf club pool. Shuttle to beach palace - you’re told it’s for elite guests only but no one checks so just grab it. Turndown isn’t automatically offered. Please call housekeeping to request it. Housekeeping is a mess. One day they didn’t even make our room up and when we called to complain at 5pm we were told we had the sign our saying done so it. Yeah of course we did. I don’t appreciate being called a liar and the manager was supposed to call us back and didn’t. That is not five star service and therefore they lose a half star in the review. Second half star was lost for quality of food. My son was very ill (as were others) after eating at Riviaya Maya and also in MoMo they served both my kids who are 14 and 16 alcohol when I asked if the cocktails were virgin (sin) I was told they were but clearly they had sake in them! Also the presentation is lovey but the food is cold and the orders always wrong. ORIGINAL REVIEW INTRO So there are many reviews here saying the same things. I agree with most of what’s been said but here is an honest review of it all from someone currently here. I would also like to add that any issue that is mentioned here has been resolved and that the hotel GM, Carlos, and Public Relation, Gloria, couldn’t do enough to help. However resolving my issues is great for me and the hotel staff are super but they need to ensure these do not happen again. However, with a hotel so large with so many people these little things will eventually be eradicated I am certain as the team really care about your experience and holiday. HOTEL Overall the place is truly wonderful. It is pretty and beautiful. If you’re unsure just take a day trip to the sister Beach Palace and you’ll see what I mean! Way better than the all inclusive in Europe. But it isn’t 100 percent perfect (I’d rate it 97). Yes it’s a large site but it’s easy to get around and golf carts are plentiful. You can walk from a sunrise to nizuc in 5 mins as we timed it. Sunrise is newer but you simply could not tell. I think nizuc is laid out better and also quieter and my preferred choice. It has a smaller lobby but it’s better designed. Sunrise is bigger and has the flowrider but it has a lot more noise. The layout and landscaping are unreal. I have never seen so much marble and stone or palm trees. No expense has been spared and you feel you could be in a five star resort all over the world. In fact in some places we felt like we were on a cruise ship it’s that spectacular. We stayed in the Catcus block which was a great location near the pool and lobby and with a cart stop for sunrise right outside. Well worth asking for a room close to the lobby on pre check on via the brilliant moon palace app POOL AND BEACH Biggest issue is the pool area and enforcement of the no saving sunbed policy. By 7.30 am literally 90 percent of sunbeds are reserved. This was raised with the hotel and they are trying. The pool concierge has been coming round a couple of mornings but they need to do this a little sooner and more often. Riding through both sunrise and nizuc today and loads of beds reserved and staff everywhere doing nothing. It’s like they really don’t care but I know the management say they do. They just need to pass that down. So well done team let’s raise this up a level and help out? It’s very frustrating to be on holiday and not have somewhere to sit as the selfish Guests keep loungers for themselves for often five hours before coming to use them . However. If you do not have a space to sit. Ask and the team will find one. So they are trying here but for me still not there. It’s take five mins to walk around pick up towels. Label loungers with times etc. There was a lot of UK guests smoking. This was also reported and is apparently being dealt with. I didn’t see any improvement in this at all. Have some decency people, this is supposedly a luxury resort. The beach is lovely, long and sand compacting so great for running and relaxing. The sea is dark due to the depth and seaweed but it’s still nice to look at. The water sports are included save for the jet skis which are $75 for 30 mins. A little more than the other Cancun hotels. The waiter service is excellent and there is a great range of drinks brought right too you and all included! Food options s also plentiful from the hotdog van to the pizza oven and the fresh tacos! Depending on who you get they will fetch food from the other side of the property for you. By far the best was Arturo Jacobo Ruiz. He was out of this world and even walked to the other side of the resort to get us pizza. Also big shout to Jorge who very kindly brought us over a large order of food from the other side and was helping my daughter with her Spanish. None of the other waiters did that. ROOMS Rooms are lovely and very luxurious. I don’t think I’ve had a nicer hotel room before. Probably our favourite thing. We have two double beds and is enough room for two adults and two teens. Be warned though people with one child are being put in a standard king room with a put up bed! Plenty of drawer and hanger space and a little light on plug sockets that you’ll probably need. Would be nice to have plugs by the bed for instance. They are a good size too and a family of four doesn’t feel cramped at all. The air con works well but is noisy. If you like your booze the mini bar is full and there are optics. The beds are comfy and lots of pillows. The views are amazing and the whole wall is windows. Our room wasn’t clean on arrival but as with all problems the hotel are very quick to address it and the room was cleaned properly! The mini was stocked and refilled when asked (but why do we need to ask?) and they even brought snacks for the kids. You have to wait a little while for housekeeping to bring towels etc but it’s a large complex so that’s fair. I just wish they would always bring the same number. The shower is a rain head. Not huge but has a shelf which the ladies liked for legs etc. Don’t forget you have a two person hot tub bath in the room. Really relaxing. Nightly turndown is nice. Fresh towels and chocs. Again you need to request this service. Room service was hit and miss and took way too long. Up to two hours!. Some days the right things came others only enough for one but the quality was excellent. I know it’s a big resort but cruise ships have the same number of rooms and cope. RESTAURANTS You also cannot beat the ice cream here. It’s amazing. And they serve it by the pool too! It’s all home made. And the flavours are amazing. The restaurants are nice although didn’t see the dress code being enforced. The good news is that the service is impeccable apart from the Mexican but I’ve left a review on that. Breakfast is a very busy but again huge options. There is even a coffee round that visits you by the pool. Remember you have more than one place to eat Even the buffet dinner is lovely and everything cooked to order from pasta to steak. You can use all restaurants other than the grand unless you pay for a day pass. No need. One thing I’ve noticed is that a few people eating at Rivia Maya in the Golf Club have been ill. The food looks amazing when served but is often a little lacking in flavour. There are really three evening restaurants in nizuc. You can still eat at the pool etc if you want also. The grand section is exclusive to Thomas cook for the UK so bear that in mind. CREDITS Resort credits are clear. We have $2500 but will pay 16% on whatever we use. Yes things are overpriced but just look at he cost at 16 percent. Jet skis are not included and are $79 and only $500 on spa allowed. But we got a tour to the ruins for $160 of the credits so only cost us s 16 percent. Dolphin swim for three of us cost $73 which can’t be beaten. It wasn’t perfect but hey we kissed and wan with dolphins for $25 each so I’m not knocking the resort credit system. GENERAL The staff are amazing. We had some issues and they have done everything they can without spending any money to resolve them. Gloria from public relations is amazing and very helpful and nothing is an issue for her. It’s the staff that make this place and she needs commending for her work and care. And tip them. Peso or dollars but it all helps. They try hard and earn little. Carlos the GM / e-concierge who answers a lot of the issues here on trip advisor was also in the case and tried to make things right that went wrong. They do take customer satisfaction seriously but I get the feeling they will do all they can providing there is t a real cost to them in doing so. They care about getting a good rating and that’s very very commendable but sometimes you shouldn’t have to ask. The issue really is that whilst things go wrong you should process that out of your organisation. Learn and improve. Let’s hope they do. WiFi is ok. During the day is slow buts it’s available everywhere. Worked well with Skype calls home. Moon palace app is ok. Use it to book the golf club restaurants and check on menus The entertainment is nightly and good. Sit down in the bar with a fresh crepe and listen to some music sing live. Our venture out by the stage and you have fire, circus and even a MJ tribute! Perfect. STAFF The staff on the ground are great. The Bell Boys are wonderful and will do anything to help you get from A to B. Jeremiria was particular great as he could tell my daughter spoke Spanish and spent a lot of time helping her. Also to Gerry (Geraldo) over at the golf club pool who even went to great lengths to go and collect ice cream for my kids. Waiters were all great. Everyone you met wanted to help. We have called out a few people who are and were great but honestly they all were awesome. Also to Gloria from public relations who couldn’t do enough to help us with the issues above. She was pleasant, helpful and did everything within her power to put this right. But even she is restricted. Finally a shout to Sarvesh who was a visiting chef from India. We walked through sunrise after a rather disappointing dinner at MoMo and we saw they had laid out an entire Indian buffet ! We spoke to him and he offered to cook us an Indian dinner the next day which was amazing. CONCLUSION So a beautiful resort with various food options that perhaps look better than taste and drinks and awesome service. The rooms are amazing and the furnishings and fit our are stunning. Just sort out the few issues like smoking and sunbeds. Put stickers with times on and then an hour later throw their stuff in the pool! All in all for service and amenities this is wonderful. It’s large so they maybe issues but it’s how people deal with those that matter. And here they have done a great job. The complex is stunning and you will want for nothing. If you like all inclusive. Love hot weather. Love your food and booze then this is the place. From the other places we have been this deserves its rating as the one of the best in Mexico. (See updated notes above) however I would not return unless it was free, I win a trip or or got a very good deal for the golf club villas. Why? Well not for the facilities at the hotel or the awful smell from the sea. But because of the majority of the people that are staying here. We met some lovely people but there are far too many that have brought the tone of the place down and just had no respect for other guests, the staff or the resort. We heard people shouting at the Bell boy to pick them up, demanding drinks at 10am, promising to tip and laughing as they walked away, smoking, giving a 1 year old coke to drink out of a milk bottle!! And of course saving sunbeds and then not returning for five hours! Remember this is a five star luxury resort that resort and everyone’s money is the same and if you can afford it then no one can stop you and why should they. Just act like you’re at a five star resort when you’re here.
