Stunning Somerset countryside in easy reach of two great UK cities: vibrant BRISTOL & Georgian BATH. Near renowned CHEDDAR GORGE in the foothills of the Mendips, it's an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.' International airport, coast, culture and heritage sites all nearby. With wood-burners, a large rambling ‘secret garden’ & arty charm, the Old Angel has been given 5 star reviews by all our guests for relaxing self-catering holidays and get-together's. (It's not a party, event, loud or late night noise house). Once a 16th Century inn, our part-timbered home combines a sense of history with contemporary comfort. Artisan and eclectic in style and decor, you'll find flagstone & wood floors, a scattering of beams & fireplaces, and up-cycled furniture. Spread over three storeys – 5 bedrooms/6 beds/3 bathrooms - with a first floor living room, large kitchen diner & cosy snug – the flexible accommodation offers ample indoor space. Hidden away from the house there’s a large secluded rear garden accessed by steps leading up to a lawned area and terraces. (To note: En route to the garden, you’ll pass Little Angel, a small apartment/separate patio at the rear of the house - sometimes stayed in by other guests, via a separate entrance). You can dine al fresco & BBQ in the Mediterranean style courtyard area and the whole garden is all yours to enjoy. We’d like Old Angel to feel like a real home-from-home.With a fully equipped kitchen: gas hob, electric fan oven, microwave, washing machine, dryer, fridge & freezer it’s well suited for self-catering. Feather & goose down duvets and all bedding, linen and towels provided. Whatever the season, there’s al wealth of countryside, culture, coast and heritage sights to explore. And a wide variety of wonderful pubs, eateries, picnic spots, cream teas, cider farms and Farmers Markets throughout the region. COUNTRYSIDE It's a wonderful base to explore the great outdoors. There’s a rich and varied landscape on the doorstep: limestone hills with dramatic gorges and caves, the Somerset Levels with its wetland moors and nature reserves and the beaches of the Bristol Channel coastline. Just down the road from the natural wonder of Cheddar Gorge – equally famous for its cheese and caves – there’s Ebbor Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves, Glastonbury Tor, Burrington Coombe and Chew Valley & Blagdon Lakes, Brean Beach and Sandy Point; rambling and mountain bike trails galore, and the popular Strawberry Line national SUSTRANS cycle & walking track which runs through Axbridge. CITY SIDE There’s easy access to city culture & buzz: vibrant Bristol is just 30 minutes drive away and Georgian Bath a scenic drive up Cheddar Gorge and over the Mendips. Charming Wells, the UK’s smallest city with a magnificent cathedral, is a local must see. As is quirky Glastonbury with its famous Tor, Abbey ruins & Chalice Well. FURTHER AFIELD The World Heritage prehistoric stone circle sites of Stonehenge and Avebury are do-able day trip destinations. And in all directions of the compass, there’s the historically rich and culturally contemporary cities to visit: Salisbury, to the East, Exeter to the South, Cardiff to the West and Cheltenham and Gloucester to the North. Although there’s so much to see and do you may well choose to stay and enjoy the Old Angel in its Medieval Square. It’s easy to stay local especially as right on the doorstep there’s 2 good food-serving pubs,an award-winning tearoom/café, King John’s Hunting Lodge Museum, Reservoir popular for waterside walks and jogs, local Co-op store (opens early/closes late).A great variety of restaurants, cafe's & eateries throughout the area: from great fish & chips to Michelin rated inns. Not to mention those famous cream teas, Farmers' Markets, cider tasting farms & character rural pubs!More

We loved our stay at The Old Angel. We stayed X3 nights but wished it was longer. My family X6 adults and X2 children stayed for my 60th Birthday. My niece kept saying - 'I love this house'. Quirky charm, with an artists touch, enhancing delicately the 600 year old charms of this unique property. Also large, comfortable and homely. Lovely roomy bedrooms and bathrooms, the largest en suite. Marianne and Simon were friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, yet we were left to feel we were free to treat as our home. The kitchen was very well equipt with everything you could need and more...Marianne even manged to conjure up a huge slow cooker for my 60th birthday meal. The Inn is very attractive home both inside and outside, set in a beautiful, small medieval square of Axbridge. The large 'secret' tiered garden rises gently, to the back, with seating area and views across rolling hills and countryside. Beautiful walks and views abound in, and around, Axbridge and nearby Cheddar Gorge, and beyond. You will be rewarded for steeper climbs with panoramic views across the Somerset Levels to the sea and Glastonbury Tor - Magical. We all agreed we'd love to come back to The Old Angel!!

I visited in July with 5 girlfriends and loved it so much I came back again with my partner and family for Xmas. It was magical at Xmas, very festive and we had a wonderful time. Suitable for all ages from my 84 year old mother to my 20 year old daughter! The house was very festive with twinkling lights everywhere and a lovely Xmas tree We used the log fire and ate and drank plenty in the very well stocked kitchen Highly highly recommend and I’m sure I will be back

We had a two night stay for a family wedding in the lovely Axbridge Parish Church well worth calling in, as is the nearby King John's Hunting Lodge. The Old Angel is great for a family gathering with casual meals round the generous sized table. Each floor has lots of interesting things to explore, it would bean amazing place to spend Christmas, Everything in the center of Axbridge is so accessible, within a couple of minutes walk there is a pub/hotel and a pub, and the same goes for a Co-op, a pharmacy and a tea room. Cheddar Reservoir is within walking distance, and The wonderful Cheddar Gorge 5 minutes in the car but with the Old Angel so delightful you might easily wish to stay in and enjoy its charms. We had a great stay.

There were 8 of us staying in The Old Angel and we all thought it was brilliant. Extremely well equipped kitchen, very comfy beds, excellent bathrooms, beautiful outside space, with plenty of places for everyone. Free parking available within a few yards, pubs and shop on your doorstep, along with a bus stop if needed. Marianne and Simon are excellent hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them. There is also an excellent larder full of spices, oils, tins etc which we were welcome to use. I hope to return here at some point.

We travel to Axbridge every year and base ourselves around the square and the Lamb pub, staying at the Old Angel is so handy with everything you need on your door step. This is the 2nd time we have had the pleasure of staying at the Old Angel and it was one of the highlights of our stay! The House is stunning and full of character with every thing you could possibly need, we found it to be wonderfully peaceful, the gardens are a magical collection of hidden terraces that just keep going, with an excellent bbq area. I couldn’t recommend this accommodation more! Marianne and Simon are wonderful hosts who couldn’t do more for our stay. The Lamb has great food, a beautiful outside terraced garden and skittles alley, we also ate at the New Inn which has a specials board that is just as big as the menu! food is always excellent and so is the beer. As always we are looking forward to our next stay in Axbridge.

Situated in the Medieval Square, this beautiful house is situated in the perfect location for local amenities and visits to the ‘must see’ places of interest, such as Cheddar Gorge and Wells, as well as coastal resorts. Set over 3 floors, the words quirky and delightful are very fitting to describe the house. 5 lovely bedrooms and the 3 bathrooms have individual designs which can make you stop to take in the attention to detail. The house also has so many areas to choose for a relaxing read, a chat or just watch the activities in the square. The garden is quirky too, it’s long with different tiers to suit your mood or the sun strength, but we always opted for the highest tier because it gained the most sunshine when we returned late in the afternoons. There are shops and restaurants in the square which catered for all our differing needs and last but not least, Marianne and Simon who own this lovely house, couldn’t be more welcoming and accommodating. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Old Angel and we will definitely be returning in the future.

We have just spent a fabulous weekend in this remarkable home. Ticked all the boxes, great location, directly onto the town square and situated between two lovely pubs. A very well equipped house, log fires, large kitchen on first floor lounge. Beautifully decorated throughout. The garden was multi layered with seating levels and secret sun terraces. What an amazing place, we will definitely be visiting again. Many thanks Marianne

This house is an amazing place to stay, right on the square in Axbridge. We hired it to get ready for our wedding at the Oak House and it was the best space. The secret garden is stunning and you almost feel like you are in the South of France. The kitchen, the living room and all other areas are so well put together and I can't wait for another excuse to stay there. Thank you Marianne so much for everything, perfect communication throughout

Marianne and Simon are FANTASTIC hosts with an amazing, unique property, which totally fits this quirky, historic town. The house is full of amazing art and antiques and each room is interesting and throws up new surprises all the time. The garden is incredible, with level after level of new places to sit, relax and unwind; some areas offering French/Tuscan feelings and some open and overlooking the valley. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are clean and spacious. There is more choice of glassware, cutlery and crockery than you see in the average IKEA. In these COVID times, we spoke up front, they made sure everything was clear and clean and we felt totally safe and happy. We feel so privileged to have been able to share their home. Just wonderful!
