Stunning Somerset countryside in easy reach of two great UK cities: vibrant BRISTOL & Georgian BATH. Near renowned CHEDDAR GORGE in the foothills of the Mendips, it's an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.' International airport, coast, culture and heritage sites all nearby. With wood-burners, a large rambling ‘secret garden’ & arty charm, the Old Angel has been given 5 star reviews by all our guests for relaxing self-catering holidays and get-together's. (It's not a party, event, loud or late night noise house). Once a 16th Century inn, our part-timbered home combines a sense of history with contemporary comfort. Artisan and eclectic in style and decor, you'll find flagstone & wood floors, a scattering of beams & fireplaces, and up-cycled furniture. Spread over three storeys – 5 bedrooms/6 beds/3 bathrooms - with a first floor living room, large kitchen diner & cosy snug – the flexible accommodation offers ample indoor space. Hidden away from the house there’s a large secluded rear garden accessed by steps leading up to a lawned area and terraces. (To note: En route to the garden, you’ll pass Little Angel, a small apartment/separate patio at the rear of the house - sometimes stayed in by other guests, via a separate entrance). You can dine al fresco & BBQ in the Mediterranean style courtyard area and the whole garden is all yours to enjoy. We’d like Old Angel to feel like a real home-from-home.With a fully equipped kitchen: gas hob, electric fan oven, microwave, washing machine, dryer, fridge & freezer it’s well suited for self-catering. Feather & goose down duvets and all bedding, linen and towels provided. Whatever the season, there’s al wealth of countryside, culture, coast and heritage sights to explore. And a wide variety of wonderful pubs, eateries, picnic spots, cream teas, cider farms and Farmers Markets throughout the region. COUNTRYSIDE It's a wonderful base to explore the great outdoors. There’s a rich and varied landscape on the doorstep: limestone hills with dramatic gorges and caves, the Somerset Levels with its wetland moors and nature reserves and the beaches of the Bristol Channel coastline. Just down the road from the natural wonder of Cheddar Gorge – equally famous for its cheese and caves – there’s Ebbor Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves, Glastonbury Tor, Burrington Coombe and Chew Valley & Blagdon Lakes, Brean Beach and Sandy Point; rambling and mountain bike trails galore, and the popular Strawberry Line national SUSTRANS cycle & walking track which runs through Axbridge. CITY SIDE There’s easy access to city culture & buzz: vibrant Bristol is just 30 minutes drive away and Georgian Bath a scenic drive up Cheddar Gorge and over the Mendips. Charming Wells, the UK’s smallest city with a magnificent cathedral, is a local must see. As is quirky Glastonbury with its famous Tor, Abbey ruins & Chalice Well. FURTHER AFIELD The World Heritage prehistoric stone circle sites of Stonehenge and Avebury are do-able day trip destinations. And in all directions of the compass, there’s the historically rich and culturally contemporary cities to visit: Salisbury, to the East, Exeter to the South, Cardiff to the West and Cheltenham and Gloucester to the North. Although there’s so much to see and do you may well choose to stay and enjoy the Old Angel in its Medieval Square. It’s easy to stay local especially as right on the doorstep there’s 2 good food-serving pubs,an award-winning tearoom/café, King John’s Hunting Lodge Museum, Reservoir popular for waterside walks and jogs, local Co-op store (opens early/closes late).A great variety of restaurants, cafe's & eateries throughout the area: from great fish & chips to Michelin rated inns. Not to mention those famous cream teas, Farmers' Markets, cider tasting farms & character rural pubs!More

Perfect weekend family break
The photos can't really do this place justice. The house if beautiful and full of character and dates back to 1550. The garden is incredible - a series of terraces and there is a wonderful patio area near the house with a BBQ, large table and sofa which we used as our outside "lounge". Marianne was an excellent host - phoning in advance to clarify the precautions they'd put in place due to COVID and the bottle of prosecco in the fridge was a nice touch. Axbridge Village is lovely and Cheddar is a two mile walk away along a pedestrian friendly Strawberry Line. Can't recommend this place highly enough and hopefully planning to visit again next year

Characterful and quirky luxury, in the heart of a medieval town.
We hired this fabulous house for a family get together over 2 nights. Everyone was blown away by the unique decor. Everywhere you look there is something interesting or beautiful to admire. There is loads of space inside and out with a generous kitchen and living room for comunal living. We commented that it was super to be able to escape to other parts of the house too so we weren't on top of each other. Highlights included: Great outside BBQ area Huge bath rooms Superbly equipped kitchen Stunning master suite Beautiful art throughout Spotlessly clean Really thoughtful and helpful host. We would wholeheartedly recommend a stag here!

Thanks for a great review after your family stay. Just a note for future guests, that the Old Angel is not a stag, hen, party or late night noise house! Ideal for relaxing family & friend get-togethers.

I Felt Like A Lord.
This is a perfect and amazing 15th Century house to stay in. Located in the medieval square of Axbridge, with an assortment of amenities literally foot steps away. What an amazing comfortable home. A home away from home, albeit laced with fantasy in what has to be the most characteristic house I’ve ever stayed in. Lovely garden and outdoor area too. A deep level of care and thought has gone in to making one’s stay as authentic and comfortable as possible. Thank you Marianne. Ever so grateful to have stayed in such an amazing place. Hats off to you. Highly recommended, anything modern just would never feel the same again.

Super property
What an absolutely gem of a place - we were all thrilled with the property - spacious and homely, with interesting things to look at, at every turn and on every floor. We couldn't have been more delighted and our host was extremely helpful. Axebridge itself is a lovely, historic village and we had a lovely evening in the nearby 'Lamb Inn' - everybody we spoke to in the village was friendly and helpful.

Fab location and well equipped, lovely house
I stayed in the Old Angel with 7 friends for a weekend away and it was perfect. The location was right on the market square so we were right by pubs, a tea room, a Co-op and a few other shops. Parking is free and nearby. The house itself is lovely - more than enough room for the 8 of us, and such a well-equipped kitchen. The owner was quick to respond to messages and left us some goodies - thank you. We had a great time and would recommend!

Utterly perfect for a relaxing weekend
If you're looking for a relaxing time away this is definitely the place! We had such a wonderful weekend away in this house, it's in such a fab location with two pubs to choose from, a tea room and a co-op all just outside the front door. Our whole group fell in love with the house as soon as we walked through the door, it's such a beautiful property with all of the facilities that you would need. We would all 100% recommend this house. There were 10 of us staying in the house, which is the capacity, but it didn't feel cramped at all, there was so much space for us all to relax in the kitchen alone, and with the snug and living room as well we had so much space. Thank you so much to Marianne for letting us stay in your beautiful house!

Old Angel
Our family had a great time staying in a house constructed in the 1500's with beautiful gardens. We were close enough to Bus services (a few steps from the door) and taxies to visit outlying areas such as Bristol, Bath, Cheddar and more. The Medieval Square with the pubs, co-op and other shops was a nice experience and the people were friendly. Thank you Marianne and Simon for allowing your first American family to stay in your lovely home.

Perfect Choice!
The Old Angel was the perfect choice for our family visiting from the States. It has all the character and history we were looking for with just the right mix of modern conveniences. Marianne made us feel so welcome and there were nice little touches everywhere making the house warm and inviting. Everything was clean and comfortable and you have everything just a few steps away - a little grocery store with everything you need, 2 pubs and a tea house that were all very good, friendly people and beautiful area. We loved every minute and really hated to leave. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us Marianne and Simon!

Excellent home from home and feat location
We stayed here with friends for a walking weekend in Cheddar Gorge. Excellent location for several walking routes we took the Strawberry line to Cheddar and took in the sights and cafes for the afternoon and walked back to the house. Both pubs we ate at had excellent food and choice of drinks at very reasonable prices. We also had breakfast at the tea rooms across the square, again good quality for the price. The house is equally well set up for self catering and there is a handy co-op in the sqaure for all your essentials and more. We didn't find parking an issue in the free car park. We never found the square too noisy when in the living room which overlooks it. Overall I couldn't fault the property and the facilities. We enjoyed our stay for both the lovely home which Marianne has created , the location and variety of things to do and we'll definitely be back!
