Scauri, the biggest district of the town Minturno (8.000 inhabitants), is a seaside resort at the foot of the Aucunci Mountains (Petrella 1533m), surrounded by hills, overgrown with typical Mediterranean bushes, trees and plants.
About 4 km sandy beache, surrounded by two green hills (the Golden and the Silver Mountain), invites for swimming, sunbathes, relaxation and walks. There are a lot of swimming areas (lidos) where you can hire sunshades, do sports like wind-or kite surfing, loan canoes and pedal boats or attend a sailing course.
A very romantic place is the beach of Spiaggia dei Sassolini, a small bay for relaxation in a quiet place, away from the daily sounds of the town or you can visit an oasis from the WWF in the nature reserve Riviera di Ulisse. The nature reserve invites also for walks and you can explore around the ruins of the old Roman Villa Mamurra (1 century BC).
You can admire the ruins of the antique Roman Minturnae and the amphitheater at the legendary Via Appia; there are to visit open-air-events like concerts, theatre or dance-performances in summer.
Ruins of the antique Scauri (named Pirae) from the time of the Aurunci nation you can find in the old centre of the town, close to the swimming area Lido dei Pini; one piece of the megalithic city wall is in a very good condition today.
A great variety of restaurants you can find in Scauri and vicinity: from the simple pizzeria over genuine restaurants with a good local cooking to gourmet restaurants and pubs. Live-music is often given at the Corsaro, at the Scolio or in the pub Mary Rock. The Mary Rock is an open-air-pub, situated in a very romantically bay directly at the sea, open only in the summer months.
Scauri is an optimal starting point for daily trips to Rome, Naples, Pompeii, and Caserta, the Vesuvio, Mount Cassino, the islands, the mountains, the archaeological excavations, monasteries, converts and spa-towns.
