This is such a lovely place to stay - really quiet with stunning views. We had such a warm and lovely welcome - woodburner lit, fresh flowers all around the cottage and free range hens eggs provided. Whilst being in a secluded location you can still easily reach Usk, which boast good pubs, fish and chip shop, a fascination museum and a castle. Also in Coed-y-Paen itself there is a good pub. The cottage itself has comfy beds and a well equipped kitchen. The stairs are steep but can be managed with care - also if you are tall mind your head! (But these latter points all go with the territory in an old cottage).

I don't really know where to start about this wonderful Forest cottage, I was looking to stay not so far away from my home town, things have been difficult over the last 12 months or so. I booked this lovely looking cottage, and wow what a find, the cottage, amazing, the views amazing and I have got to thank Janet and Mike the owners for being so welcoming, and making sure we had an amazing time, yes that word again Amazing. Thank you Mike and Janet we will see you again soon. Phill and Veronica

My daughter, myself and two grandchildren arrived mid afternoon and were warmly greeted by Janet and Mike.....lovely, friendly hosts who were available if needed. Mike kindly offered to take the 9 and 15 year old target shooting in the grounds and this was one of the highlights of their stay. The cottage is well equipped and towels are provided, which is a bonus in self catering places. A powerful hot shower and comfy beds made for a blissful night’s sleep. The gardens and views are great and it was so lovely to sit and relax in such peaceful surroundings. My daughter’s second visit and my first......and we’ll be back again. Thank you, Jess, Andrea, Ellie and Harry

Beautiful cottage in Ursk, honestly don't think we have ever been somewhere so quiet and relaxing. The cottage is really well maintained with the original features and extention blending in well to give some modern updates in the form of the kitchen and bathroom. The facilities have everything you need to be self catering and the shower is powerful and lovely. The stairs take a bit of getting use to but there is a hand rail and they make a lovely original feature. Free WiFi in the property which is a nice touch and full use of the area for walks etc. We went exploring one day up the back into the woods and neighbouring areas it was really lovely and picturesque. The cottage has a hottub which was lovely after a long walk, the views from the hot tub were amazing. The only downside is that your restricted on the use of it to the hours of 10 till 9pm which was disappointing as we'd have liked to use it more later in the evening but its locked so you can't. Also asked that you only have the jets on for one hour a day so we found this limited the use of it completely and we didnt end up using it as much as we'd planned. Fully understand the reason that was explained but wish we'd known before we booked and arrived as the hot tub was the main selling point for us. Not sure if you can use it at all now or they were removing it from the listing so check before you book. The owners were very lovely and polite and made us feel very welcome and at home so for a relaxing and quiet escape this is the perfect place. Can't attach photos as my files are too big but I had some amazing photos of the view and cottage.

Stayed at the cottage for a couple of nights, with my husband and 2 boys such a lovely cottage. Very clean and so warm welcoming keeping some of the original cottage features which made it a lovely place to stay. Owners were so lovely, very friendly and chatty and so helpful with area information if you need any, nothing was any trouble for them a lovely couple. Only thing i would say that was dissapointing was the use of the hot tub you could only use it for 1 hour in the day which my sons were dissapointed about, this rule was brought in due to previous guests misusing, i understand rules are brought in for safety reasons but i think a disclaimer is better to sign to say you are responsible for your actions or even the owners decide on individual guests on whether they trust them as were a family that were really looking forward to this extra use of the cottage. Apart from that i would recommend the cottage for a lovely break away

Booked via Airbnb, Forest Cottage is idyllic. Set in the Welsh valleys in the midst of a Christmas tree farm it doesn’t really get much more perfect than this for a peaceful break with the family. Our hosts Mike and Janet were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Janet even bought a miniature Christmas tree to decorate the living room and chocolate coins for the children (1&3). A cot was provided, fire guard to keep the little ones away from the log burner and a stair gate although this wasn’t secured so we moved the chest of drawers to block the stairs, although I’m sure our hosts would have sorted this if we’d asked. The fully equipped kitchen was great. Logs, kindling and firelighters were provided for the log burner. The hot tub was easy to use and under cover and the views were lovely - unbroken countryside. My only suggestion would have been a path up to the hot tub rather than negotiating wet, slippery grass and mud. We thoroughly enjoyed our pre-Christmas break and thoroughly recommend the cottage to others. We’ll certainly be returning for another stay.

We stayed here as we had a family wedding in Usk. The cottage was cosy, warm and the beds were so comfortable. Mike and Janet were welcoming, they had the log fire lit ready for us. It was a much needed break afta the last few months we have had and we felt like we were at home.the views were amazing. Would definitely recommend this lovely cottage.

About the neighbourhood
The village of Coed-y-Paen doesn’t have any shops but it does have a great pub and sitting proudly outside the ancient church is our library contained in the red phone box! There are three local golf courses to enjoy and the reservoir is within walking distance. Boating and fishing is available as well as wonderful walking. Day fishing licences can be bought in the local shops in Usk for fly fishing as the river is famous for it’s salmon. If you fancy trying clay pigeon shooting, we have the facilities within our grounds with all the equipment required. One on one instruction is given by Mike who is an experienced competition clay pigeon shooter and instructor.
Getting around
As we are out in the sticks, we don’t have any buses. The nearest bus or trains are found in Cwmbran which is 3 miles from the cottage. The easiest way to get to Cardiff is the Park and Rides which are very easy to use and cheaper than parking in the city. Cardiff is only 30 minutes from here.
