We stayed in unit 2B-1; 3 adults and 2 children ages 7 and 4 ½.
If I could, I would rate our stay as 4.5 stars. Almost everything was great! The condo 2B-1 is managed by Bayside Realty. They provide an information packet via email and printed out in the unit that is a great help. The condo is exceptionally well-equipped including fresh flowers, condiments, cooking utensils, soap, and towels. Whatever we needed was there. The beds are comfortable, the A/Cs work well, the unit is large and well appointed. We enjoyed being in the condo - it felt luxurious and really added positive vibes to the whole vacation experience! We did a lot of cooking in the condo. Daniel picked us up at the airport (arranged by Bayside) and on the way to the condo we stopped to shop at the grocery store. We were met by a Bayside rep at the condo, and received a lot of help getting our luggage and groceries into the condo.
The Condo is by the beach and in the jungle, so we expected bugs. The ants however attacked our first meal very quickly. We ate outside on the patio, and in less than 30 minutes ants has swarmed a small dribble on the range. So be warned to not leave food out even for short periods of time, and to clean up any spills immediately. Also, be warned that the locks on the patio doors do not work well. One door I could not get to ever lock, and others locked automatically no matter what I did - we could not close them while on the patio without them locking.
There is a water dispenser in the condo that will provide cold or hot water from the large water bottles (about 5 gallons) you can purchase through the security at the front gate (delivered to your door), and we made a lot of use of it. One problem is the water dispenser has the smallest opening on top that I have ever seen for inserting the water bottle. As a result, each time I changed it out I spilled a lot of water on the floor. There is likely some trick to changing out the water bottles, and this information should be added to the condo unit information packet by Bayside when they get it figured out (the person who met us at the condo did not even know the water dispenser was there - we asked him about dispensers since we saw a big water bottle in the pantry and he said he did not know of any in the unit - the dispenser is behind the pantry door, so you have to get inside the pantry and shut the door to see it). Another item of note, the dishwasher is not anchored and does a poor job at cleaning the dishes - we pretty much had to pre-wash everything.
The ocean and pool views from the condo were better than we expected. There is the large rock blocking a lot of the view, and this was easily seen in the photos before we rented, but the rock actually helps with having some privacy. The condo location is great. It is as close as you can get to the awesome peninsula pool (a walk of less than 30 seconds). We were far enough away to not hear the construction of additional condos being built. Playa Arrocito and Oceans restaurant are just a couple minutes’ walk. The birding is good (we particularly loved the orioles, the hummingbirds and the white-throated magpie jays).
Arrocito Beach is beautiful! We went to the beach Sunday through Friday and it was never crowded (though we were there during the off-season). Is was very swimmable for adults and teens; small kids need to be watched (while we were there 2 hurricanes were forming off the coast, yet the waves were relatively small compared to other Pacific beaches we have visited). All but one day, we had the Comso mattress loungers to ourselves. One bad item is that there is a large government installed sign between the loungers and the beach that blocks almost the whole view. The sign says the area is closed, but does not say why. Directly in front of that sign, Cosmo erected an even bigger sign that blocks the government sign from exterior view. The result is an eyesore of a visual blockade that is about 7 feet tall and 14 feet wide. Since we planned on using the loungers at the beach a lot (and did so), this was a major problem for us - indeed it is the #1 issue we had with our stay and the major reason why we did not rate it 5 stars.
We used the restaurants at Playa Arrocito only for drinks since we did our own cooking for breakfast and lunch. They are happy to bring your order over to the Comso loungers. Prices are good for being on the beach.
We ate dinner at Oceans Restaurant once, and it was really good. The restaurant opens at 2:00 PM most days, and the staff is very friendly. They will also bring orders of drinks (not sure about food) to the peninsula pool. We recommend patronizing Oceans during a stay at Cosmo, and the food and view are worth the trip if you are staying elsewhere.
Although there are 4 pool areas on the property (2 of the pool areas have 2 pools, for a total of 6 pools), we spent almost every afternoon at the peninsula pool (it is actually 2 pools). It has great ocean views and plenty of nearby trees for bird watching. My kids are 7 and 4 ½ years old and they had a ball! They loved being in the pool more than being on the beach. It was the off-season, so we had the pool to ourselves practically every minute we used it.
We did a 3-hour boat tour one morning. It was very pleasant. We were picked up at Playa Arrocito. The coast is beautiful! We took advantage to swim at a small isolated beach and then to snorkel at Playa Entrega. On the way back to Playa Arrocito we looked for dolphins and turtles and were rewarded by finding a couple of turtles engaged in an "embrace" - remember I have small kids!
It is easy to get a taxi by contacting the security at Cosmo, and the cost is very reasonable to/from Santa Cruz ($43 pesos). We came into town to explore, shop and eat rolled ice cream almost every evening. Just note that the taxis have a hard time navigating at Cosmo, so you may have to go looking for it and flag it down after you call for one.
3 items that Bayside can improve: 1) A couple of Bayside employees showed up at the condo unannounced. They hopped up onto the patio/deck from outside and watered the plants. They then came into the unit from the patio and introduced themselves and left via the front door. This was a little shocking since Bayside did NOT establish a date and time with us regarding any such intrusion, and the employees did not ring the doorbell first - they were just suddenly there. This should never happen! 2) As noted above, Daniel provided our transit to/from the airport, and this was arranged by Bayside. This was very helpful and appreciated. However, it was not disclosed until after we were brought back to the airport for our return flight that there was a charge of $400 pesos. The charge is reasonable and worth it, but there is no question it should have been disclosed by Bayside before arrangements were made. The way it was set up by Bayside made it seem like it was included in the rental rate. 3) In a similar fashion, after our rental was concluded, we were charged for the electricity we used. This policy is not stated anywhere online or in the welcome packet. We only suspected we might get charged based on the fact other management agencies for rentals at Cosmo do explicitly list their electricity use and charging policy, and when we left, the Bayside representative said he was going to take a photo of the electric meter. We only had the A/C turned on when using the bedrooms, and as noted above, we did a lot of cooking (the stove is electric). We were charged $52.38 (US). Bayside did use the current exchange rate in the calculation.
Overall, the experience was excellent. The weather wonderful! There was not the oppressive heat plus humidity we have experienced at other beaches. Despite the hurricanes that formed off the coast, we only had one day with some rain (there was also some rain at night which is just fine). I would love to return and would rent this condo again, and indeed, if I could afford it I would buy a unit at Cosmo - it was that good!
