Wildlife is an integral part of this landscape, you will hear and see wildlife through out your stay. We take much pride in maintaining a habitat where people and animals can co-exist. The fully furnished ground floor apartment sleeps two; choose the bedroom arranged with a pair of twin beds or a king, all properly outfitted with quality mattresses, plump pillows and imported linens. Security screens afford airflow or may be shuttered to assure absolute privacy. Kitchen includes range, refrigerator, blender, coffee maker, cookware and table setting. We’ll stock some basics for your arrival then guide you in shopping the weekly farmer’s markets or haggling with the mobile vendors for fruits and vegetable, fish, eggs and meat. Belly up to the breakfast bar for casual seating, dine at the hardwood table under ceiling fans, or head out to the pool deck for a gourmet picnic in the garden. The artisan bamboo sofa and two oversized chairs provide cushioned seating in the wall-less room where the outside blends to inside. Under the wide eaves and overhead fans, this area is cool on even the warmest of days. Hammocks along the perimeter put you under-cover but virtually in the garden, a decadent way to spend the afternoon. Bathroom features a sink carved from a tree trunk, mosaic murals and a garden shower, all faucets deliver plumbed hot water. The tree-level upstairs puts you at eye-level to the howlers and sloths that frequent the property. The kitchen, dining and living area are surrounded by bannisters and open walls, like living on a big covered deck. The effect is amazing. Overhead fans throughout the space supplement the natural breezes. With a full kitchen, oversized refrigerator/freezer, 6 burner stove, oven, double sink, prep island, microwave, toaster oven, blender and an abundance of quality cookware, the kitchen draws in helpers for the family style feast. A gas BBQ is situated around the corner to allow easy access. With a table hand constructed from a single tree, the dining area will seat up to 10 comfortably. An ample quantity of dinnerware, in delightful bright fiesta colors set a table that makes any meal a party. Or gather the crew and play cards, board games or build a puzzle when you just want to sit up high and watch what might climb, crawl, creep, flitter, or buzz by below. The living area features a large cushioned sofa and two oversized cushioned chairs, two rocking chairs and a hammock. A handprinted game table features backgammon, checker/chessboard, and cribbage. Wifi throughout the house keeps you connected and able to post those selfies to jealous friends back home. The “Master bedroom” features a king-sized bed and headboard crafted from reclaimed lumber designed to celebrate the Caribbean colors, culture and craft.. Overhead fan and secure screens create a restful night sleep. With an ensuite bath--sink and toilet with the shower perched on a ledge extending off the back of the house. Generous plantings and screen afford modesty while providing a unique experience. Mosaic and painted murals decorate the bath areas. The second “Family bedroom suite” is two distinct rooms. The bedroom includes a king-sized bed with a headboard of live-edge wood designed by the homeowners. Utilizing the often-discarded pieces of fallen trees, the headboard stirs the imagination similar to seeing pictures in clouds. The family room also features a bunk bed with a double bed on the bottom and a twin bed on the top. The bunk, too, is crafted from reclaimed lumber and live-edge wood. Sleep well knowing you saved a tree!! The adjoining bathroom includes a sink and toilet within the house and a shower perched off the back. Here the theme is jungle with a waterfall scene depicting local Volio Falls, An assortment of bathroom essentials and quality towels are for home use and we provide sarongs for the beach. A jacuzzi sits undercover of a traditional thatch roof allowing you a soak among the beautiful gardens regardless of weather. The pool features a pebble zero-entry, wet deck for sunning, and plunge depth. This has become a favorite place to watch the monkeys overhead. Extensive plantings and a frog pond provide habitat for many species of wildlife; keep tabs on Max the sloth and her expanding family who now occupy several trees on the property, catch the routine visits of the agoutis, and try your luck at nabbing the perfect photo of the magnificent blue morpho butterfly as it regularly weaves through the garden. This was a wonderful place to spend a week. The owners are terrific and went out of their way to take us places and to make sure we were comfortable. They treated us like family - In the best way! The gardens were lovely, birds and critters exciting, and nearby restaurants very good. We hope to return soon.

Thank you for the kind words! We are always delighted when guests discover the same magic about this property as we do. Even today doing some garden maintenance I was constantly distracted by what is just natural, but always intriguing. A particular treat today was a troop of Spider Monkeys! That's unusual and of course I stopped to watch their acrobatics in the trees above. A. year is almost over, and I reflect back on the amazing guests we've met, you among them. I hope you are well, and we do hope you'll visit again.

I really enjoyed staying at this house. It is about two stories tall which makes it about tree height. The only thing I was disappointed with was the wild life, because the description said, there are howler monkeys that were near the house and would wake you up at 5 in the morning. I don’t know if it is the time of year or if the description hasn’t been updated and the monkeys moved out of the area. The owners of the house are very nice and ready to help and answer any concerns you have. From the house is about a 5 minute walk to the beach. The house is on the right of a hotel called Shawanda. It’s a bit hard to see in plain sight. There still isn’t just as much wild life as I would have expected. But it still is a great place to stay I highly recommended it.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your feedback. I'm so sorry you didn't get the monkey visitors during your stay. The howlers (like all wild animals) follow the food, so it must be they were finding what they wanted in my neighbor's yard this week. I've noticed fewer monkeys this week, but i've also seen a lot more sloths, some very low in the trees, there have also been several iguanas and the macaws are going over 3-4 times a day. I don't know if the abundant presence of some are connected to the absence of others, but I do know that things change constantly here. I'm glad you enjoyed the home perched up in the trees and the proximity to the beach, I'll do my best to call the monkeys back!

My girlfriend and I picked Angler's Lair based on the recommendation of a friend that stayed there a couple years ago. It is the most peaceful and serene house one could ever hope to luck up on the jungle. Clean, quiet (but for the "music" from the amazing wildlife) and relaxing. Janet and Nick are so down to earth and genuinely kind people and they did a great job of balancing how often they came around to check to see if we needed anything and giving us privacy. Nick even gave us an "orientation bike ride" around the area to make sure we'd know where to find the best beach spots and the closest places to grab food. Oh! They also have the sweetest dog that drops in every so often to hear about your adventures! This is absolutely a great place to stay and it gives you the full experience of the jungle and the beach.

Thank you for the nice note!! We enjoyed having you visit, and only wish it could have been longer--there's definitely going to be a NEXT TIME!! The pool is taking shape, so you'll especially enjoy watching the toucans in the trees as you sip your cocktails floating!! Be well, until we meet again.

We stayed at Angler's Lair over New Year's and had a great time. The accommodations were excellent. Outdoor kitchen. Outdoor living room. Outdoor shower. Inside bedroom. Felt like we were living in the jungle... because we were! And the beach was just on the other side of the road. Janet and Nick let us use their bikes and gave us the lowdown on restaurants and clubs. We saw all kinds of wildlife, up close and personal, and enjoyed our stay immensely. We hope to make it back someday soon! Cheers! Doug & Angie

We just returned from Janet and Nicks perfect spot. We had everything we needed for a great 6 nights. Comfortable bed with soft sheets, french press coffee maker are just a couple of the special touches provided by the super accommodating hosts. Close enough to town for convenience, yet remote enough to see troops of monkeys and flocks of parrots, right from the hammocks on the porch! The great Playa Chiquita beach is down a path across the street. Washer and dryer availability is a nice bonus too. The books, and games were also a nice touch. We were on the pacific coast fighting the remnants of Otto and booked on the day we arrived.... The hosts had everything ready and waiting for us including some fruit, snacks and cold beers 😎! We can't say enough, no need to look further... stay here for a great trip! Thanks again for everything Janet and Nick!

Janet very kindly came to pick us up from our previous lodgings. The accommodation is the entire ground floor of a house set in a very lush jungle garden and even comes complete with a resident sloth, and howler monkeys who pass through loudly! The main living area is open to the elements on all sides giving a unique experience. The bedroom is like a cool cave, dark and chilled, complete with a gecko which made me jump on more than one occasion! We loved our daily visits from Zuri (ridgeback dog) and Delgado (friendly cat). And the bikes were a useful edition for shopping or exploring. The nearby beaches are beautiful. Nick & Janet were great hosts. Cooking dinner for us one night and taking us with them to a nearby macaw rescue centre. Recommended if you want to experience a little jungle life with some home comforts.

We loved having you for the short stop on your long adventure! Thank you for the kind words, in brought back happy memories of your stay. All is well here at Angler's Lair, Zuri is still patrolling for snacks, Delgado for laps, and Nick and I are continually blessed with the people who come as guests and leave as friends. Best wishes to you both.

We really enjoyed our stay at Angler's Lair. The property is absolutely gorgeous, it is spacious and quaint at the same time. It truly feels like your own personal property. The owners were kind, accommodating, and helped us in any way they could. From booking our shuttle back to San Jose to giving us rides into town when they could and anti-itch cream, they were truly willing to do what was necessary to make our stay wonderful! There is a kitchen where we prepared breakfast, access to snorkel gear and bikes, which saved us a lot of money in the end! At night and in the mornings you could hear howler monkeys and frogs, which made for wonderful sleeping arrangements! The shower was always hot and the beer stayed cold in the fridge they had! The property is ~4K to town and only 2K to the best beaches around up at Punta Uva. There are nearby restaurants and markets that don't require you to go into town if you don't want to. We didn't have a vehicle, but a bike just worked fine. Further, they gave us a cell phone to use with contacts built in for taxis, etc, which was so nice to have! I only wish we could stay longer! The price was on-point as well! The only negative feedback is that because the owners live upstairs, you could hear them early in the morning. We are naturally early birds, so it was mostly fine, but for those that want to sleep in, might be a bit disruptive. They do their best to be quiet, but just the nature of the property. Also, they were doing some construction on the property while we were there and the sound of a saw made for less than private feeling. However, I understand you can't just cease all projects while people are there and while the weather is good, otherwise nothing would ever get done! But, something to keep in mind. But all in all, very quite, lovely, and truly a slice of paradise.

Thank you, Christina, for the thoughtful review. I wish you could have stayed longer... we would have enjoyed a cup (or 3) of great Costa Rican coffee in the NEW ranchito that Chicho finished! It's funny, we schedule January for the construction because it's often a rainy month and tourism is low... but not this year. We are sorry that it disrupted you at all. We hope that bikes (to ride away to a quieter place) made up for it!! And yes, as you point out, we do live upstairs, and while Delgado (cat) and I are accomplished tiptoers, I can't say so much for my husband or Zuri (dog)!! Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! But as you point out, this really is a better match for people who like to enjoy the monkeys, parrots, and toucans that commute through at 7:00 AM then take a nice siesta in the afternoon.

This was our first visit to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and what an experience it was! We were hoping to see a lot of wildlife and we didn't have to leave the property as Janet and Nick have regular visits from Capuchin and Howler monkeys, agoutis, blue morpho butterflies, black and green dart frogs, all types of birds (parakeets, toucans, trogons, hawks) and a even a sloth. Janet has created a beautiful garden that attracts all of these animals and numerous butterflies. There was nothing more relaxing than sitting in the open living area watching the wildlife and smelling the flowers on a daily basis. Janet and Nick are the most gracious hosts and went out of their way to make our stay one of the most memorable of our 4 week trip. They included us for Christmas dinner with their friends, took us to town to enjoy their restaurant, made very last minute arrangements for transport to Jaco when our car rental fell through, and even had bicycles available for our use. The short walk to the beach was as much of an adventure as the beach itself as we almost rode our bike into a sloth that was hanging from a tree branch. Nick and Janet provided excellent recommendations for places to shop and have dinner and we absolutely loved all of their suggestions. All were either a short walk or bike ride away. We used the bikes to get everywhere we needed to go and made it more interesting to be able to see all the small things just off the road, hidden trails, animals, birds. Angler's Lair is in the perfect location, half way in between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo, and an absolutely tranquil place to relax.

If there's a better place to stay in puerto Viejo I'd be hard pressed to find it. It's like visiting your favorite aunt and uncle in paradise. They've been so helpful and comforting. First day here Janet explained how to use the money (we had no clue.) She gave me a bandaid and antibiotic cream for my blister, drove us to town in her golf cart, fed us, and just made us feel comfortable in a place that she KNOWS is out of our comfort zone. It's just a good way to ease yourself in if you've never been here. The beach is super close and the house is off the beaten path. A little ways to get into town but there's plenty restaurants close by and a grocery store for you to buy things to cook yourself in the kitchen....just do yourself a favor and stop searching. You're not going to find a better place to stay or better people to stay with!

The two plus weeks we spent here were just wonderfull. It was a very relaxing and safe place to stay. We could take a bus to town or on down the beach if we were so inclined. There is a small grocery store very close that was nice. The beach is only a few minutes walk. Janet and Nic were the best hosts. We want to come back next year. I have stayed in a lot of places and this was definately top of the list!
