My family of 8 (6 adults and 2 kids) stayed for 5 nights in mid October. Yes, it's off season for this famous ski town but there is lots to do to enjoy the wonderful fall season. Since the house comes with the use of van, it was easy to drive around to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage. The cool but not yet freezing temperatures was comfortable. The house is a 5 minute walk to the famous "Milk Kobo", which is a complex of quaint shops and restaurants. You must enjoy the famous Hokkaido dairy of ice cream, yogurt drinks, cream puffs and the most delicious cheese tarts, fresh out of the oven! There is even a small vegetable farmer's market and since the house has a fabulous kitchen, you can enjoy the wonderful produce!
Back to the Harmony House...
The SPOTLESSLY CLEAN house well laid yet with 3 SPACIOUS bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The upstairs bedroom is the largest, so my brother and his family of 4 slept there, with 2 futon mattresses on the floor, next to the bed. There is a cozy reading nook at the top of the stairs. The living room and kitchen are also spacious. All the fixtures and appliances are of top quality and there is even a fancy wine cooler so you can stock up for your stay. Fujimi is an excellent cook and you can arrange for her to prepare a meal for you. On our first night, she prepared sashimi platters, sushi, a meat/potato dish called "nikujaga", grilled fish and a chicken and mushroom nabe. It was an incredible amount of food so come hungry! I highly recommend you make restaurant reservations since during off season, some restaurants are closed so the ones open seem to be busy. Both Fujimi and Tom were excellent hosts and will be happy to make recommendations and assist with reservations.
Last thing regarding transportation to/from Niseko. During peak winter seasons, transport companies provide New Chitose Airport (CTS) and Sapporo bus options (not local bus, but specifically to get skiier/snowboarders with luggage and gear). Since we visited off peak, I hired a private JUMBO taxi through GO HOKKAIDO tour company, which is Hokkaido tour company specifically designed for English speaking guests, so all English email communication was a piece of cake. The JUMBO taxi was perfect for my family of 8, with large suitcases. Without luggage, the vehicle would sit 9 passengers + driver. On our day of checkout, we hired the same taxi for a 6 hour sightseeing charter before delivering us to the CTS airport, where you want to spend at least 1-2 hours there for the most incredible shopping and dining.
All in all, the HARMONY HOUSE was a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend staying there. Mahalo Tom & Fujimi-san!!!
