About the neighbourhood
Ostuni is a city located about 8 km from the Adriatic coast in the province of Brindisi, region of Puglia, southern Italy. The name derives from ‘Astu Neon’ meaning 'New City' in Greek and features a walled acropolis that stands as a testament to its Eastern influences. Ostuni's much-photographed Piazza della Libertà is overlooked by a cathedral that was built in the 15th century in a late Gothic / early Renaissance style. This is where the trulli region ends and where the warm, dry Salento region begins. The town boasts some excellent restaurants, stylish bars and swish yet intimate places to stay; it is popular throughout the year, especially in Summer. Ostuni is also known as ‘La Perla Bianca’ meaning 'The White Pearl'.
Getting around
The old town of Ostuni does not allow motorized vehicles (except residents'). It is a small town built on a hill, so bring your walking shoes and expect to walk along the narrow, winding medieval streets of this whitewashed town. If walking is not your thing, motorized 3-wheeled vehicles (called 'Ape') can be rented for individual trips (with a driver) for €10 per trip. A car would be ideal if you wish to explore the surrounding countryside or villages.
