This small wooden eco cabin is perched high on a cliff with breathtaking views over the Caribbean sea and West Coast of Saint Lucia. With everything you need, our cabin is built by local craftsmen in the traditional village style amid coastal forest in a protected area rich in birds, plants and wildlife. Many of the furnishings and fittings have been upcycled or recycled. Built entirely of wood by local artisans, we have also upcycled many objects and materials to furnish the cabin which gives it a unique character. As passionate environmentalists the cabin reflects our deep commitment to minimalist living and gives you a chance to experience this for yourselves. With an amazing view from the large terrace over the neighbouring coastline and the tops of the trees, you can see the birds and butterflies feeding at the same height as your sunlounger! The two sets of double doors open to create a completely open view and the modest but tasteful living space incorporates a standard double bed with mosquito net, kitchen area with gas hob and stove and a small bathroom with WC and hand basin. On a second deck below the main terrace is a private shower accessed by a short flight of steps and this deck also has a drying area for washing or wet towels. All the water is our own harvested rainwater, double filtered, pure and safe to drink. The water to the shower is heated by passive solar heating through a special hose installed on the roof of the Hangout. The electricity is generated by solar panels on the roof of our house so the Hangout is completely off-grid. The Hangout has its own access to the parking area through a small wooden gate in the fence of the property. A family of three black labradors lives with us on the property so dog lovers are especially welcome! We also have a family of goats which help us to keep the grass down along the roadside! We do not have a pool as we are surrounded by beautiful beaches and the dangers of swimming in chemicals such as chlorine are now well known - especially to those with allergies or sensitive skin and eyes. In addition we would not want to dispose of chemically polluted water. The Hummingbird Hangout belongs to the Treehouse which is the only house down a no through road so it is very safe and quiet. Pablo and I are committed environmentalists and our passion for nature drives everything we do. Unlike other guest houses we never use pesticides or insecticides but work with natural pest solutions. A network of 15 fishpools provide an environmental solution to prevent mosquitoes breeding as the fish eat any mosquito larvae and therefore drastically reduce the mosquito population - this is in direct contrast to the common local practice of fogging for mosquitos with a spray made of neurotoxins. Using our experience, we provide advice to local hotels to help them reduce their impact on the environment and conserve resources such as energy and water. We have planted our garden to encourage birds and other wildlife onto our plot and we have left two thirds of our large property wild as a wildlife sanctuary. We are also planting many native plants in our plot which have been rescued from development areas in order to protect them from extinction. We love using driftwood, corals, shells and other items collected from the beaches around the house. We are making fan coral lamps and bowls and plates from calabash and we make our own glasses from bottles left by guests. We have inherited a commercial ice cream maker and as Pablo loves ice cream we always have a selection of homemade ice creams available which we invite guests to share if they wish. We just ask a small fee to cover ingredient costs and work on an honesty box principle where you settle for what you have consumed when you leave. They have proved very popular! We work with two local Saint Lucians and we have designed with them a series of land and sea tours which are not on any tourist 'programme'. These are focused on local experiences and off the beaten track adventures. We can arrange for you to have a barbecue on the beautiful beach below the house or book you into Roots 2, the Creole restaurant in Marigot Village. A local Saint Lucian masseuse is happy to come to the house with her couch, towels, oils etc to provide guests with a home massage and we have a special agreement with the watersports shop in Marigot Bay for the hire of watersports equipment - a special package has been agreed for our guests. All of these experiences are arranged directly with local people, not tour agents, and are described in the information sheet which we send out to our guests once they have booked with us. Also available for hire if you book it early enough is our spare car, a small 4x4 Suzuki Jimny which is ideal for the road conditions here. Let us know if you want more details. About the neighbourhood
The Hummingbird Hangout is just 15-20 minutes walk to Marigot Bay with its watersports for hire, restaurants, bars, cafes, minimarket, bank and ATM. There is also a small secluded beach just 15 minutes walk away with great snorkelling.
Getting around
We recommend hiring a car unless you like walking in which case you could use the local public minibus system which runs all over the island. We know a small local family owned car rental company (they do not pay us a commission! We simply like to keep the money on the island and out of large international companies hands) or you could hire our second car, a small 4x4 jeep which we rent on a day by day basis on a first come first served basis.
