I always try to vary where I stay. After a night or two at a plain old 3 star barebones city hotel (sometimes with shared toilet/shower facilities even), I'll go to a mom & pop B&B the next few nights, finally moving on to a 5-star, lap-of-luxury resort or super posh city hotel to end my vacation, saving the best for last. This way I can really get to appreciate the deluxe places when I want to splurge and at the same time save some money along the way since I don't need to have "only the best" every day. This also keeps me from getting bored by staying at the same kinds of places day in and day out too, adding to my total experience.
